Lonavala

Lonavala is a Western Ghats hill town between Mumbai and Pune, most popular during the monsoon when waterfalls, reservoirs and green escarpments transform the landscape. The same season also brings fog, slippery paths and heavy weekend traffic.

What to see

• Karla and Bhaja Caves — major early Buddhist rock-cut sites outside town.
• Lohagad Fort — a popular fort walk, especially green during monsoon.
• Duke's Nose and viewpoints — visibility and access depend heavily on weather.
• Bhushi Dam area — extremely crowded in monsoon; water conditions can be dangerous.
• Rajmachi routes — trekking or road access varies by season and vehicle.

Planning the visit

One night works for a short break; two allow caves and a fort. Lonavala is on the Mumbai-Pune rail and road corridor. Avoid peak weekend traffic where possible. For monsoon visits, use shoes with grip and do not enter fast-moving spillway water.

Food and purchases

Chikki and fudge are the standard local purchases; compare freshness and ingredient quality rather than assuming every roadside outlet is equivalent.
