Getting there and around
Ayodhya’s pilgrimage core, newer approach roads, railway stations and airport serve very large visitor flows. Movement changes during festivals, weekends and security restrictions, so the correct plan uses the actual terminal and allows for road closures, pedestrian-only zones and queues.
By air
Maharishi Valmiki International Airport Ayodhya Dham is the nearest airport. Flight routes and frequencies should be verified before booking because the network continues to evolve. Taxis, authorised cabs and arranged hotel transfers connect the airport with the pilgrimage area. Lucknow Airport is the most important larger-network alternative, followed by a road journey; Gorakhpur, Prayagraj or Varanasi may suit particular regional itineraries but are not equally convenient for every route.
By rail
Ayodhya Dham Junction is the closest principal station for much of the sacred core. Ayodhya Cantt, historically associated with Faizabad in older records, is another major station and can be more suitable for selected trains and accommodation areas. Both names may appear in travel planning, so verify the station printed on the ticket and arrange pickup for that terminal. Do not confuse Ayodhya Dham with Ayodhya Cantt when estimating walking distance to the temples.
By road and bus
Ayodhya has road connections with Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi and other Uttar Pradesh cities. State and private buses may use different terminals or temporary arrangements during major events. Confirm the precise drop point, because vehicle restrictions can shift passengers to outer holding areas. Festival-period journey times can be much longer than ordinary estimates.

E-rickshaws, autos, shuttle services and walking are central to local movement. Ram Path, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Ram Ki Paidi and the Saryu ghats are best sequenced as connected pedestrian or short-transfer clusters, but barriers and security checks can alter the route. Carry minimal luggage, use authorised storage where available and keep footwear arrangements in mind. Guptar Ghat and outer sites require a separate road trip. During Ram Navami, Deepotsav and other major occasions, expect crowd controls and reduced vehicle access; decide a meeting point in advance and avoid scheduling a tight train or flight immediately after darshan.
