Passed through on the way to the Valley of Flowers — vehicle and personal registration handled at Rishikesh's RTO and tourist center before continuing on toward Joshimath. Beyond that stop, this is the genuine "Yoga Capital of the World," strung along the Ganga where it first meets the plains below the Himalayas.

Sightseeing

Passed through on the way to the Valley of Flowers — vehicle and personal registration handled at Rishikesh's RTO and tourist center before continuing on toward Joshimath. A genuinely practical stop rather than a sightseeing one, but a reminder that any Garhwal-bound trek or Char Dham trip routes through this exact bureaucratic step before the mountains proper begin.
Laxman Jhula & Ram Jhula
Two iconic suspension bridges spanning the Ganga, both central to the town's identity as a spiritual and yoga destination. Laxman Jhula, by tradition marking the spot where Lakshmana (Rama's brother) once crossed the river on a jute rope, gives sweeping views over the water and the ashrams lining both banks; Ram Jhula, a short distance downstream, connects some of the town's most visited ashrams and temples. Both are pedestrian-only and busiest at sunset.
Rishikesh — Yoga Capital of the World
Rishikesh earned this nickname honestly — dozens of ashrams and yoga schools line the Ganga here, drawing practitioners from across the world for everything from a single drop-in class to month-long teacher-training courses. The Beatles' 1968 stay at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram (now a semi-abandoned, graffiti-covered site nicknamed the "Beatles Ashram") cemented the town's global reputation and remains a genuinely atmospheric, if slightly eerie, spot to wander through.
Triveni Ghat
Rishikesh's main riverfront ghat and the site of a well-attended evening Ganga Aarti, echoing (on a smaller scale) the more famous ceremonies at Haridwar and Varanasi further along the river's course. A good spot to sit quietly by the water regardless of whether the Aarti itself is on.
Rishikesh works well as a one-to-two-night stopover before continuing further into the Garhwal Himalayas — the river/yoga atmosphere here is genuinely distinct from anywhere else on a typical Char Dham or Valley of Flowers route.

Given its ashram-town character, Rishikesh is almost entirely vegetarian and alcohol-free — cafes along the Ganga serve a mix of Indian and international traveler food (smoothie bowls, thalis, herbal tea) reflecting the town's long-standing wellness-tourism crowd.
