A stop on the way back from the 2023 Southeast Asia trip, January 2024: the Sangam (where the Siberian migratory birds were still around), and a stop at the Allahabad High Court — including its Chief Justice's chamber, and a note on the court's own history (conceived 18 June 1866, under the Royal Charter of Queen Victoria).

Allahabad High Court
A stop here in January 2024 included a visit to the Chief Justice's chamber — a rare, direct look inside one of India's most significant judicial institutions. The court's own history dates to 18 June 1866, when it was conceived under the Royal Charter of Queen Victoria, making it one of the oldest High Courts in the country, with a colonial-era building whose architecture reflects that founding period.
Triveni Sangam
The sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical, invisible Saraswati river — the single most important reason to visit Prayagraj, and the site of the Kumbh Mela, held here roughly every 12 years. The Ganga and Yamuna are visibly distinct at the meeting point (the Ganga runs paler and murkier, the Yamuna a deeper blue-green), while the Saraswati is traditionally described as joining from underground. On this January 2024 visit, the Siberian migratory birds were still around at the Sangam — winter is genuinely the best season to see them, alongside the calmer, more manageable crowds outside Kumbh years. Boat rides out to the exact confluence point are the standard way to experience it, with rates roughly ₹100–150 for a shared boat.
Akbar Fort (Allahabad Fort)
Built in 1583 by the Mughal emperor Akbar as a strategic military base securing the eastern reaches of his empire, sited directly at the Sangam to control river-based trade and defense. Inside: a 3rd-century-BCE Ashokan pillar bearing imperial edicts, the Saraswati Koop (a well believed to mark the mythical river's source), and the underground Patalpuri Temple. Much of the fort remains under Indian Army control today, with only select areas — the pillar, the temple, the well — open to visitors, and typically only during major festivals.
Also worth knowing about: Anand Bhavan, the ancestral home of the Nehru-Gandhi family and now a museum, and Khusro Bagh, a Mughal-era garden holding several royal tombs.

Prayagraj's food culture is straightforward North Indian and Awadhi-adjacent, without a single standout specialty the way nearby Lucknow has — practical thalis and street snacks near the Sangam and the main market areas cover most needs.
