Getting there and around
Auroville is a dispersed township north of Puducherry rather than a compact city centre. The Visitors Centre is the correct starting point for most day visitors, but guest houses, community spaces, cafés and project sites are spread across forested roads. Arrival and local mobility should be arranged before assuming that everything is walkable.
By air
Chennai International Airport is the principal large-network airport and is roughly a three-hour road journey under normal conditions, though traffic can extend the transfer. Official Auroville visitor material recommends pre-arranged shared or private taxi services. Puducherry Airport may have limited scheduled connectivity; verify current operations before relying on it. For late arrivals, confirm guest-house reception hours and the exact entrance because many properties are not on a conventional urban street.
By rail
Puducherry railway station is the closest convenient city railhead for many travellers, followed by a road transfer to Auroville. Villupuram Junction offers a wider regional network and can be more useful where Puducherry services do not match the itinerary. Tindivanam is another possible railhead for selected routes but requires a pre-arranged road transfer. Check the actual arrival station and do not assume that “Pondicherry area” means a short final leg.
By road and bus
Road access is available from Chennai through the East Coast Road or other highway approaches and from Puducherry through local roads. Government buses connect Puducherry with the Auroville area, but frequency and stop convenience may not suit luggage or timed appointments. The Auroville transport ecosystem also includes shared taxis and local pickup services. Confirm the destination gate, not merely “Auroville,” when booking.
Local movement, cycles and visitor access
Official Auroville guidance encourages lower-emission movement. Bicycles, electric cycles, scooters, shared rides and local transport services are available, subject to current rental conditions. The Visitors Centre issues viewing-point passes and the walk toward the Matrimandir viewing point passes through the International Zone; a free electric shuttle is available for visitors who may find the walk difficult. Do not ride or drive into restricted zones. For a longer stay, arrange mobility through the guest house or an authorised service, carry a map, use lights after dusk and allow time for unpaved or poorly signed internal roads.
