Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram · महाबलीपुरम · மாமல்லபுரம்

Overview

Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a historic coastal town on the Bay of Bengal and one of India's most important centres of early South Indian stone architecture. Its UNESCO-listed monument group brings together rock-cut caves, open-air reliefs, monolithic rathas and the structural Shore Temple within a compact landscape shaped by the Pallava dynasty.

The town is not only an archaeological stop. Its beach, working stone-carving tradition, cafés, guesthouses and coastal resorts make it suitable for a Chennai day trip, a focused study visit, a backpacking break, a family holiday or a slower luxury-resort stay.
