The "Princess of Hill Stations" — a spontaneous, same-day-planned trip during the VIT years, and a genuine escape into the Palani Hills with lakeside walks, plunging viewpoints, and a botanical garden known for its exotic collection.

A 4pm Phone Call
The kind of trip that starts with a 4pm phone call: a friend asked if they were going anywhere, the answer was yes before there was even a plan. Within hours: an overnight bus from Vellore to Coimbatore, on to Ukkadam bus stand, then Palani (a deliberate detour before Kodaikanal, past hundreds of windmills against green fields and blue mountains) — all planned and booked same-day, off an atlas and a quick search for bus routes. A 4pm phone call, and the answer was yes before there was a plan.
Kodai Lake
A man-made lake right at the centre of town and the essence of Kodaikanal itself — tranquil boating, tree-lined walking and cycling paths ringing the water, and a cool, relaxed pace that sets the tone for the whole hill station.
Coaker's Walk
A roughly 1km paved pedestrian path along steep slopes on the southern side of town, constructed by Lt. Coaker in 1872. Winding around Mount Nebo, it opens onto sweeping panoramic views of the valleys and plains below — on a clear day, visibility extends as far as Dolphin's Nose, the Pambar River valley, and even the city of Madurai. Evening is the best time, when mist rolls slowly over the mountains.
Pillar Rocks
Three giant natural rock pillars rising some 122 metres, near Coaker's Walk — one of Kodaikanal's most striking natural formations, often wrapped in mist that adds to the drama of the view.
Bryant Park
A botanical garden known for its wide collection of exotic trees, hybrid flower species, and manicured, colourful grounds — a peaceful, well-maintained counterpoint to the town's wilder cliffside viewpoints.
Also worth knowing about if time allows: Guna Caves, Silver Cascade waterfall, and Green Valley View (also called Suicide Point) for another dramatic panorama over the plains.
Food
Kodaikanal's hill-station cafés and small restaurants serve a mix of South Indian staples and traveler-oriented comfort food; homemade chocolate is a genuine local specialty worth picking up from one of the small shops around town.
