Khajuraho

Khajuraho is a small heritage town built around an exceptional group of Chandela-period temples. The UNESCO-listed monuments are divided into western, eastern and southern groups, with the western group containing the most concentrated and best-preserved ensemble.

What to see

• Western Group — Kandariya Mahadeva, Lakshmana, Vishvanatha and other principal temples; allow at least half a day.
• Eastern Group — Jain temples and a quieter circuit outside the main complex.
• Southern Group — smaller and more dispersed, useful for a second day.
• Archaeological Museum — sculpture and context for the temple programme.
• Sound-and-light or cultural programmes — seasonal and schedule-dependent.

Planning the visit

Two nights provide a comfortable visit. Khajuraho has an airport and railway station, though service frequency varies. October to March is easiest. Hire a qualified guide or use a reliable site guide: the temples' value extends far beyond their most publicised sculptures.
