India destination

Kozhikode

Kozhikode · कोझिकोड · കോഴിക്കോട്

city Kerala South

Kozhikode, historically Calicut, is a Malabar Coast city associated with Indian Ocean trade, the arrival of Vasco da Gama near Kappad and a food culture shaped by Arab, coastal and regional influences.

What to see

  • Kozhikode Beach — a city waterfront best around evening.
  • SM Street — the historic commercial spine for sweets, snacks and shopping.
  • Mishkal Mosque — an important timber mosque in the Kuttichira area; visit respectfully.
  • Kuttichira heritage quarter — old ponds, streets and religious architecture.
  • Kappad Beach — outside the city and linked to the 1498 Portuguese landing tradition.
  • Beypore — known for boat-building history and the harbour edge.

Planning the visit

Two days cover the city, Kappad and Beypore at a measured pace. Kozhikode has airport and rail access. October to March is comfortable; monsoon travel is atmospheric but wet.

Food

Malabar biryani, pathiri, seafood, halwa and regional bakery traditions are central to the experience. Choose busy established restaurants and sweet shops rather than a checklist of viral stops.
