Write it down

Start with yourself. A simple writing practice, and two ideas about what feeds the soul.

The first lesson of that day was: serve yourself first (swa-seva), and only then serve others.

The practice that came with it is this: write a letter to God (in Rajyoga, "Baba") about whatever you are feeling right now. It is a way of putting a name to a feeling without acting on it. You do not have to send it or show it to anyone.

In class we looked at the usual troublemakers: lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego. They are called the five vices, and the teaching is that they lose their grip when I remember I am a soul and connect with God.

Two more notes from the same day, which I like:

  • Words write our destiny. What I say and decide shapes what comes next.
  • The soul has food and exercise. Its food is good thoughts (knowledge), whenever I get the chance to hear something good. Its exercise is yoga, which is meditation.
