Speak less, slowly, sweetly

Three small rules for speech, and what too much talking costs me.

October 12, 2026· 1 min read

In class this was taught as three short rules, which I wrote in Hindi: kam bolo, dheere bolo, meetha bolo.

  • Speak less. Use few words, and make them solid and weighty.
  • Speak slowly. Keep the tone low and the voice soft.
  • Speak sweetly. Do not hurt anyone. Say things that support and motivate.

My notes also list what happens when we talk too much:

  • I get tired.
  • I waste the other person's time, and that leaves a negative impression on myself.
  • I get more tangled up.

It is a practice that can be tried anywhere, even in the middle of a conversation.
