A helicopter flight over the delta — genuinely one of the best ways to grasp its scale, since the Okavango is an inland delta with no outlet to the sea, its flood arriving counter-intuitively during the dry season as water travels over 1,000km from the Angolan highlands. From the air, the maze of channels, lagoons, and palm-covered islands is visible in a way it never quite is from the ground.
