Getting there and around
Chennai is a long coastal metropolis with several railway terminals, an airport linked to Metro and suburban rail, and attractions dispersed from North Chennai to the East Coast Road. Choose transport by corridor and avoid crossing the entire city repeatedly in one day.
By air
Chennai International Airport (MAA) at Meenambakkam is the principal air gateway. The airport has a Chennai Metro station and is also near Tirusulam suburban railway station. Metro, suburban rail, airport taxis, app cabs and buses provide onward options. Check operating hours and luggage practicality before choosing public transport for a very early or late flight.
By rail
MGR Chennai Central (MAS) is the principal terminal for many north-, west- and east-bound long-distance trains and connects with Central Metro and suburban services. Chennai Egmore (MS) serves many routes within Tamil Nadu and toward the south. Tambaram (TBM) is an important terminal for selected south-bound trains and suburban services, while Chennai Beach and other stations belong to the suburban network. Read the station code carefully because Central, Egmore and Tambaram are far apart and not interchangeable.
By road and bus
Intercity buses use Kilambakkam Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus for many south- and west-bound services, while Madhavaram and operator-specific boarding points serve other corridors. Koyambedu remains a major urban transport landmark, but not every long-distance service departs there. Confirm the actual terminal before leaving. East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road traffic can be heavy on weekends.
Metro, suburban rail and local movement
Chennai Metro is useful for the airport, Central, Egmore-side access through nearby stations and several major corridors. The suburban railway is valuable along the beach–Tambaram line and other routes, while MTC buses provide the broadest coverage. Autos and app cabs handle the last mile. Group Fort St George, George Town and North Chennai; combine Marina, Mylapore and San Thome; treat Guindy, Adyar and southern institutions separately. Mahabalipuram and farther East Coast Road sites require a dedicated road outing.
Planning the visit
Use November to February as the broad comfort window, while checking current weather, festivals and closures. The recommended stay is Three or four nights. Festival periods may add meaning but also crowding, altered access and higher room demand.
