Getting there and around
By air
Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport lies southwest of the centre. Taxis and app cabs are the simplest transfers; allow for city traffic and verify pickup zones.
By rail
Indore Junction is the principal long-distance station, but selected trains use Lakshmibai Nagar, Rau or Dr Ambedkar Nagar/Mhow. Check the station code and terminus before choosing accommodation. Sarwate and other bus points serve regional routes, but departure points vary by operator.
Local movement and road planning
Within the core, autos and app cabs are practical. Rajwada, Sarafa and nearby markets are best walked once dropped outside the densest lanes. Retaining a car inside the old core is usually counterproductive.

October to March is comfortable for markets and heritage walks. Summer afternoons are hot, while monsoon rain can affect old-city movement and the road approach to Mandu or Maheshwar. Sarafa begins its food-market transformation only after jewellery trading winds down, so current operating patterns matter more than a fixed online time. Festival and wedding periods increase old-city congestion.
Safety and preparation
Walk Rajwada, Krishnapura and Sarafa as one compact cluster after arranging a pickup outside the most congested lanes. Keep valuables secure, sample food selectively and plan the late return before public transport thins. For Ujjain, Mandu, Maheshwar or Omkareshwar, agree vehicle waiting, tolls and return timing and avoid a non-refundable onward connection after the excursion.
