I am a soul, not my body

The first idea in Rajyoga class, and why my teacher calls it meditation.

October 5, 2026· 1 min read

On the first day of class, one idea was put on the board: shift from body-consciousness (deh-abhimaan) to soul-consciousness. My notes say, underlined, "This is meditation."

Meditation is often thought of as sitting still and quieting the mind. Here it is described as something simpler and bigger. For most of the day we think of ourselves as my body, my job, my name, my role. Meditation, in Rajyoga, is to step back and remember that I am the one who has these, not the thing itself: a soul.

In Rajyoga we learn that this is the base of everything else, which is why the class started here. I am a beginner, and this is as far as I have understood so far.

If this interests you, learn it from a teacher in person. See Find a teacher.
