Indonesia

A family trip — parents, brother, and his friends — through Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bali, with a birthday and an anniversary celebrated along the way.

01The Route

1 Jakarta 18 Apr 2018

Entry point via Soekarno-Hatta, traveling with parents, brother, and his friends who joined directly from China — the first stop of a short, packed family trip.

2 Yogyakarta 19 Apr 2018

Stayed at Bale Ayu Homestay in the Kubupenlokan area, booked through Booking.com — a cultural-heartland stop between Jakarta and Bali.

3 Bali flight from Yogyakarta

The final stop before heading back through Kuala Lumpur — a full-day car rental with driver (airport pickup, Mt. Batur hotel drop-off included) was negotiated down hard for the group of six.

02Best Time to Visit

April–October is the dry season — clear skies for Bali specifically, and easier road conditions for a family group. This trip ran in April, right at the start of the dry window — good timing, whether planned that way or not.

03Visa Reality Log

Visa-on-arrival, roughly $20-25 — no advance application needed.

04A Birthday and an Anniversary, on the Road

April 21 (birthday) and April 22 (parents' wedding anniversary) — both celebrated in Indonesia on this trip.

05Cost Breakdown

Currency exchanged in advance through BookMyForex before departure. The Bali car rental negotiation (see above) shows the real haggling range — opening quote 1,100,000 IDR/day for 6 people, pushed toward 600,000 IDR — but the actual final agreed price isn't confirmed yet.

06What Surprised Me

How naturally the group expanded. This started as a family trip — parents, my brother — and picked up his friends from China along the way, mid-itinerary, without it ever feeling like an add-on. By the time the Bali car rental negotiation happened, it was a genuine six-person unit haggling together, not a family trip with guests tacked on. The negotiation itself was the real education: watching an opening quote (1.1 million IDR/day) get worked down in real time, in a language none of us really spoke, taught more about how price actually works in Southeast Asia than any guidebook would have.

06If You're Planning This Trip: What to Save On

01
Negotiate Bali car rentals hard — the opening quote is rarely the real price.

1.1 million IDR/day was the opening ask here; real negotiation got it down meaningfully. Don't take the first number at face value.

02
A car-and-driver hire handles a shifting group size better than fixed transport.

Friends joined mid-itinerary here — flexible private hire absorbed that easily in a way pre-booked seats wouldn't have.

03
Exchange currency in advance through a service like BookMyForex.

Cheaper and less hassle than hunting for a counter once you've landed.
