What the river actually carries.

The Gomti runs 16km through Lucknow, and a 2026 pollution board report found stretches of it aren't even fit for washing hands. Unlike air, there's no live sensor feed for river health — this page tracks the best publicly reported data, clearly dated, rather than pretending it's real-time.

Reported June 2026. No certified drinking or contact-safe rating currently applies to multiple monitored stretches through the city — fecal coliform has been measured over 100,000 MPN/100ml at some points, against a bathing-safe limit of 2,500 MPN/100ml (details in the table below).

Unlike the Air page, this number isn't refreshed automatically — there's no public real-time water-quality API for the Gomti the way WAQI exists for air. This gets manually updated whenever UPPCB/CPCB publish a new assessment.

01What's Actually in the Water

That's roughly 40× the bathing limit and 2,000× the drinking limit — which is the actual basis for "not fit for handwashing," not just a qualitative impression.
Industrial & agricultural runoffEffluent from sugar mills and distilleries upstream (notably around Sitapur), plus fertilizer/pesticide runoff, adds to the load before the river even reaches Lucknow.
Untapped drainsNGT orders have repeatedly flagged specific drains flowing directly into the river without ever being tapped or redirected to treatment — a fixable, already-identified problem, not a mystery one.

02Why the Riverfront Project Didn't Fix This

₹1,500 crore spent on walkways and lighting. The sewage-treatment gap underneath never got touched.

The Gomti Riverfront Development project spent roughly ₹1,500 crore — and focused almost entirely on walkways, lighting, and landscaping rather than the sewage-treatment gap that's actually driving the pollution. A 2017 report exposed significant financial irregularities in how that money was spent. The result: a better-looking riverbank, with the same untreated sewage still flowing beneath it. It's a useful pattern to recognize — a civic project can look like progress while leaving the actual mechanism untouched.

03Rivers That Got Genuinely Fixed

This isn't a uniquely unsolvable problem — a few cities took on comparably bad urban rivers and actually changed the underlying chemistry, not just the view:

The common thread in the ones that actually worked: sewage treatment capacity came first, and the visible riverfront improvements came after, not instead of it.

Go For Gomti runs a weekly Sunday cleanup campaign (#sundayforgomti) along the riverbank — real, ongoing, on-the-ground effort, not a one-off photo-op drive. I'm joining starting August 16, 2026.
