🇨🇭 Switzerland Visa Guide for Indian Passport Holders

Indian passport holders need a Schengen Short-Stay visa (Type C) to visit Switzerland for tourism or business — Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area (though not an EU member), so this same visa also covers travel across other Schengen countries during your trip. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option. Applications go through VFS Global, the official partner of the Embassy of Switzerland in India, but all applications are assessed centrally by the single Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, no matter which city's VFS centre you submit at.

VFS Global publishes separate checklists for different Schengen visa purposes relevant to Switzerland — Tourist, and Visitor (visiting family, friends, etc.) — each with its own specific document requirements. Visa requirement for an Indian passport holder

A visa is required for every visit to Switzerland, regardless of length or purpose, since India has no visa-waiver arrangement with the Schengen Area.

Where and how to apply

• Complete the Schengen visa application form, available free of charge from the State Secretariat for Migration's (SEM) own website, and fill it in as part of your VFS Global appointment booking, or download and complete it separately, then print it for submission.
• Applications are assessed by the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi only — regardless of which VFS Global Visa Application Centre across India you submit at.
• Submit in person, through a representative, or through an authorised travel agent — the Switzerland Visa Application Centre does not accept applications sent by courier or post.
• Note on jurisdiction and timing: applications accepted at Switzerland Visa Application Centres outside Delhi and Mumbai are forwarded to the Embassy on the 2nd working day, adding a short delay compared to submitting directly at the Delhi or Mumbai centres.

Eligibility and passport conditions

Per VFS Global's own published checklists: your passport must be issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months after your scheduled return, with at least 2 blank pages. Handwritten passports, or passports with observations noted on the bio-data page, cannot be accepted.

Application steps

1. Identify your visa type (tourist, visitor, or business) and check the specific checklist for that category.
2. Complete the Schengen visa application form, signed (and, for the Tourist checklist specifically, signed twice).
3. Gather your supporting documents in the exact order specified by VFS Global's checklist — documents should not be stapled.
4. Book an appointment at a Switzerland Visa Application Centre for biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
5. Attend your appointment, submit your documents, and pay your visa fee and service charge.
6. Wait for a decision — VFS Global's own guidance states processing normally takes 7 to 10 working days, but can extend to up to 15 working days under the Schengen Codex.

Forms required

The Schengen visa application form, free of charge from SEM's website, completed and signed by the applicant (signed twice for Tourist-category applications specifically, per VFS Global's checklist) — or by a legal guardian if the applicant is a minor.

Document checklist

Confirmed directly from VFS Global's official checklists, common to both Tourist and Visitor categories: your valid passport (issued within the last 10 years, 3+ months validity, 2+ blank pages) and any previous passports (bound together with a rubber band, not stapled); 1–2 recent passport-size photos (white background, not older than 6 months, pasted/clipped as specified — not stapled or pinned); the completed and signed application form; a personal cover letter with your travel plan (a copy required for each family member if applying together); an introduction letter on business letterhead from your employer, signed and stamped by HR or a director, stating your position, duration of service, and a "no objection statement" for the trip; and travel insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 / USD 50,000 / CHF 50,000 per person, covering repatriation, urgent medical attention, and emergency hospital treatment for your entire Schengen stay. Visitor-category applicants additionally need an invitation letter from their host in Switzerland, including the host's full contact details and a copy of the host's passport, ID, OCI, or residence permit.

Photo and biometric requirements

1–2 recent passport-size photos (white background, not older than 6 months, 35–40mm width) are required, positioned exactly as specified in the checklist — copied or scanned photos, and stapled or pinned photos, are not accepted. Fingerprints and a photo are captured in person at your VFS Global appointment.

Fees

The Schengen short-stay visa fee is set at EU level, the same framework as our other Schengen-country guides in this archive. We were not able to independently confirm the exact current fee from a primary SEM or Embassy of Switzerland fee-schedule source during this review. VFS Global's own notice states that if you paid online by card and later need a refund, this can take up to 15 working days to process. Confirm the current fee directly with VFS Global before applying.

Appointment process

Book your appointment through VFS Global — each member of a family or group must book an individual appointment, even for a family of four. Reschedule at least 3 working days before your appointment; rescheduling more than twice counts as a fresh appointment, and cancellations are only accepted 3 working days before the scheduled date (service charges are not refunded on cancellation).

Processing information

VFS Global's own guidance states standard processing takes 7 to 10 working days, extendable to up to 15 working days under Schengen rules — allow extra time if submitting outside Delhi or Mumbai, given the additional 2-working-day forwarding delay.

Common mistakes

• Submitting your application at a VFS centre outside Delhi or Mumbai without accounting for the additional forwarding delay to the Embassy.
• Missing the "no objection statement" specifically required in your employer's introduction letter.
• Rescheduling your appointment more than twice, which resets it as a fresh booking.
• Underinsuring — Switzerland's minimum coverage figure (€30,000 / USD 50,000 / CHF 50,000) is stated in three currencies and should be checked carefully against your policy.
