Indian passport holders need a Schengen Short-Stay visa (Type C) to visit Portugal for tourism or business — Portugal is part of the Schengen Area, so this same visa also covers travel across other Schengen countries during your trip. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option. Applications go through VFS Global, the official partner of the Embassy of Portugal in India.

VFS Global's own Portugal page carries a notice, dated 8 July 2026: "Applicants with an Appointment at AIMA Must Apply for an E6 Visa." This reflects Portugal's broader shift from its former immigration and borders agency (SEF) to AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo), and appears to introduce a specific E6 visa category tied to AIMA appointments. We were not able to fully confirm the exact scope of this E6 category, or whether it affects standard short-stay tourist/business applicants, from the primary notice alone. If your trip involves any AIMA-related appointment or longer-stay intention, check this specific notice and the current guidance directly with VFS Global or the Embassy before assuming your process matches this guide's standard short-stay coverage.
The Schengen Short-Stay (Type C) visa covers tourism, business visits, and family/friend visits. National (Type D) visas for longer stays, study, or work are a separate category with their own fee structure and are out of scope for this guide.
A visa is required for every visit to Portugal, regardless of length or purpose, since India has no visa-waiver arrangement with the Schengen Area.

Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least 2 blank pages — consistent with standard Schengen requirements described in our France guide.
The Schengen visa application form, downloaded, completed, and printed, is the core document.
Confirmed directly from VFS Global's own official Tourist Visa checklist: the completed and signed online visa application form (dated the same day as your appointment); one recent (within 6 months) passport-size colour photo with a white background (3.5cm × 4.5cm, no glasses); an original personal cover letter, introducing yourself and explaining your purpose, duration, and itinerary, with full host/hotel contact details in Portugal, and details of any accompanying travellers; an original Employment Letter and Leave Sanction Letter from your employer, stamped and signed by the HOD, stating your designation, purpose of visit, and authorised leave days (with specific alternate wording required for self-employed applicants, depending on whether they have a business partner); confirmed round-trip flight reservations; internal travel reservations (flights, trains, car bookings) if visiting more than one Schengen country; and travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen countries, covering at least €30,000.
One recent (within 6 months) passport-size colour photo (3.5cm × 4.5cm, white background, no glasses) is required with your application. Fingerprints and a photo are captured in person at your VFS Global appointment.
The Schengen short-stay visa fee is set at EU level, the same framework as our other Schengen-country guides in this archive. We were not able to independently confirm the exact current fee from a primary VFS Global or Embassy of Portugal fee-schedule source during this review. Confirm the current fee directly with VFS Global before applying — note that card payment at the VAC is available for Indian applicants only; other applicants may need to pay in cash.
