🇳🇴 Norway Visa Guide for Indian Passport Holders

At a glance

Indian passport holders need a Visitor's Visa (a Schengen Short-Stay Type C visa) to travel to Norway for tourism or business — Norway is part of the Schengen Area (though not an EU member), so this same visa also covers travel across other Schengen countries during your trip. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option. Applications are submitted through VFS Global, the official partner of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in India — but uniquely among the Schengen countries in this archive, your application is forwarded to Norway's Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for the actual decision, not decided by the Embassy itself.

About the Schengen Area (full explanation on our France guide) — and an important exception

Norway is one of 29 Schengen Area countries, and a Schengen Type C visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, calculated across the whole area. Important exception specific to Norway: Svalbard, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands are explicitly not part of the Schengen area, despite their Nordic/Norwegian and Danish association — a standard Norway Schengen visa does not cover entry to these territories in the same way.

Choose your purpose of travel

UDI's own visitor-visa page organises applications by specific purpose: visiting parents or children, visiting your spouse or cohabitant, visiting your sister or brother, visiting another family member, visiting a girlfriend or boyfriend, business, attending a cultural event or visiting an organisation, tourism or other reasons, or travelling with/visiting an EU/EEA national family member. Select the category matching your actual purpose during your application.

Visa requirement for an Indian passport holder

A visa is required for every visit to Norway, regardless of length or purpose, since India has no visa-waiver arrangement with the Schengen Area. You cannot work (including remote work) while visiting Norway on a visitor's visa, and you cannot use it to apply for a residence permit while in Norway.

Where and how to apply

• Register your application online first — the person inviting you to Norway can also register the application and book your appointment on your behalf, a convenience specific to Norway's process.
• Submit your documents in person at your closest VFS Global centre — this step cannot be done remotely, even if someone else registered your online application for you.
• Applications are handled by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, which forwards them to UDI in Norway for the actual processing and decision.
• Provide an online payment receipt confirming your registration and fee payment in the Application Portal when you submit at the Visa Application Centre — payment is made online by credit or debit card (Mastercard or Visa).

Eligibility and passport conditions

Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least 2 blank pages — consistent with standard Schengen requirements described in our France guide. Indian diplomatic passport holders travelling to Norway in an official capacity are exempted from the visitor's visa requirement.

Application steps

1. Register your application online in the Application Portal (you, or the person inviting you to Norway, can do this).
2. Pay your application fee online by credit or debit card as part of registration.
3. Book an appointment at your closest VFS Global centre for biometrics.
4. Attend your appointment in person — this step must be done by you personally, regardless of who registered the online application.
5. Wait for processing — your application is forwarded from the Embassy in New Delhi to UDI in Norway for the decision.
6. Track your status — the Embassy notes that as long as your passport hasn't been returned to VFS Global, no decision has been made yet; the Embassy itself cannot provide further status details.

Forms required

The online application form, completed and paid for through the Application Portal, is the core document — submitted in person with your supporting documents at your VFS Global appointment.

Document checklist

Requirements vary by your specific purpose of visit (family visit, business, tourism, etc.) — UDI's own visitor-visa page, personalised for India, outlines category-specific guidance. Standard essentials across categories include your passport, evidence of your purpose of travel, travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 across the Schengen area, and evidence of financial means and ties to India.

Photo and biometric requirements

A recent photo meeting standard Schengen specifications is required with your application. Fingerprints are mandatory for residence permit applications, and are captured in person at your VFS Global appointment for standard visitor visa applicants as well.

Fees

The Schengen short-stay visa fee is set at EU level, the same framework as our other Schengen-country guides in this archive. We were not able to independently confirm the exact current fee from a primary UDI or Embassy fee-schedule source during this review. Confirm the current fee directly within the Application Portal before paying — note that EU/EEA family members can choose to apply directly at the Embassy and pay no visa fee, or apply via VFS Global and pay the service fee instead.

Appointment process

Book your VFS Global appointment after registering online — remember, the in-person submission itself cannot be delegated to someone else, even if your Norway-based host registered the application for you.

Processing information

UDI's own guidance states standard processing takes 15 working days from when the Embassy receives your application, extending to up to 45 working days during high season or surges, or in special circumstances. Do not book or pay for any accommodation, flights, or other bookings before your visa is issued, per the Embassy's own explicit recommendation. Do not apply for a multiple-entry visa unless you can document a specific need for it — UDI's guidance is explicit that a multiple-entry visa is unnecessary just to visit several Schengen countries on the same trip; it's only needed if you must leave and re-enter the Schengen area during a single trip, or have multiple separate trips within a short period.

Common mistakes

• Assuming a Norway Schengen visa covers Svalbard, Greenland, or the Faroe Islands — none of these are part of the Schengen area.
• Booking non-refundable travel or accommodation before your visa is issued, against the Embassy's own explicit advice.
• Requesting a multiple-entry visa without a documented need — UDI will not issue one without justification under the relevant Visa Code provisions.
• Contacting the Embassy directly by phone or social media for visa status updates — the Embassy explicitly routes these enquiries to VFS Global instead.
