At a glance — good news for Indian passport holders

Indian passport holders currently do not need a visa to enter Malaysia for tourism, business, social, or transit purposes — confirmed directly and consistently by both the Immigration Department of Malaysia and the High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi. This exemption has been in effect since 1 December 2023 and is currently stated to run until 31 December 2026. You do still need to complete a free, mandatory Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before you travel — this is a separate declaration, not a visa.

You do not need eNTRI or a paid eVisa

You may see older guides mention eNTRI (Electronic Travel Registration & Information), a 15-day registration facility that ran from 2017–2018, or third-party sites offering to sell you a Malaysia "eVisa" for a fee. Neither applies to your current situation as an Indian passport holder — the High Commission of Malaysia's own page is explicit that Indian nationals are simply exempted from the visa requirement for social visit purposes under the current scheme, with no registration fee or eVisa payment required for this exemption itself.

Choose your purpose of travel

The current visa exemption for Indian nationals covers business, tourism, social, or transit purposes, for a maximum stay of 30 days per visit — per the High Commission of Malaysia's own guidance.

Visa requirement for an Indian passport holder

No visa is required for the purposes and duration described above. If your visit doesn't fit these categories (for example, longer stays, work, or study), a different visa process applies — check the Immigration Department of Malaysia's eVISA/MyVISA portal for other categories.

Where and how to "apply" — the mandatory MDAC (not a visa)

• Complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) at the official portal — this is mandatory for all foreign travellers, regardless of visa status, and must be submitted within 3 days before your arrival in Malaysia.

Eligibility and passport conditions

Per the High Commission of Malaysia's own stated criteria for Indian passport holders using the visa exemption:

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
• You must have confirmed return flight tickets.
• You must have a confirmed hotel booking.
• You must complete the MDAC online at least 3 days before arrival.

You should also be prepared to show sufficient financial provisions to sustain your stay, and confirm you are not on Malaysia's Suspect List or Stolen/Lost Travel Document system, or categorised as a prohibited immigrant — these are standard entry conditions applied to all foreign visitors per the Immigration Department's own general guidance.

Application steps (MDAC, not a visa)

1. Confirm your travel dates and accommodation in Malaysia.
2. Complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online, within 3 days before your arrival, at the official portal.
3. Save or print your MDAC confirmation.
4. Travel to Malaysia with your passport (6+ months' validity), confirmed return ticket, and hotel booking ready to present at immigration if asked.
5. Present your documents at the immigration checkpoint on arrival — border officials retain the right to grant or refuse entry based on the standard entry conditions.

Forms required

Only the MDAC, completed online — there is no separate visa application form for travellers using the current visa exemption.

Document checklist

A valid passport (6+ months' validity), confirmed return or onward flight tickets, confirmed hotel booking for your stay, your completed MDAC confirmation, and evidence of sufficient funds if requested by an immigration officer.

Fees

There is no fee for the visa exemption itself, and the MDAC is also free. If you need a different visa category outside the current exemption's scope (for example, a longer stay, or a purpose not covered), separate eVisa fees apply — check the Immigration Department's MyVISA portal for those specific categories.

Processing information

There is no visa processing time to plan for under the current exemption, since no visa is required — simply complete the free MDAC within the 3-day pre-arrival window.

Common mistakes

• Paying a third-party website for an "eVisa" or "eNTRI" registration that isn't actually required under the current exemption for Indian nationals.
• Forgetting the MDAC — while free and simple, it is mandatory, and not the same thing as (or a substitute for) proper travel documentation.
• Assuming the exemption covers stays longer than 30 days, or purposes like work or study — these require a different visa process.
• Not double-checking whether the 31 December 2026 exemption end date has been extended or changed by the time you travel, particularly if your trip falls near or after that date.
