🇮🇹 Italy Visa Guide for Indian Passport Holders

At a glance

Indian passport holders need a Schengen Short-Stay visa (Type C) to visit Italy for tourism or business — Italy is part of the Schengen Area, so the same visa also covers travel across other Schengen countries during your trip. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option. Applications go through VFS Global, the official partner of the Italian Embassy/Consulates in India — but unlike Germany, Italy assigns your application to a specific jurisdiction based on where you live, and this matters a great deal.

Important: your state of residence decides where your application goes

Per VFS Global's own jurisdiction guidance, Italy divides Indian applicants into three zones, and applying to the wrong one risks rejection without a fee refund:

• North jurisdiction (decided by the Embassy of Italy, New Delhi): residents of New Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chandigarh.
• West jurisdiction (decided by the Consulate of Italy, Mumbai): residents of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, and Lakshadweep — applications here can only be submitted at the Ahmedabad, Pune, Cochin, or Mumbai VFS centres.
• South jurisdiction (decided by the Consulate of Italy, Bengaluru): residents of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Puducherry. The Bengaluru Consulate specifically requires that the same person who will attend the appointment is the one who books it.

Confirm your correct jurisdiction on VFS Global's own jurisdiction page before starting your application — this is more restrictive than some other Schengen countries (compare our Germany guide, which centralises all Schengen processing regardless of Indian state).

Choose your purpose of travel

The Schengen Short-Stay (Type C) visa covers tourism, family visits, and short business activities — Type D (long-stay national visas for study, work, or family reunification) is a separate, more document-intensive category processed directly by the consulate rather than through VFS Global in most cases, and is out of scope for this guide.

Visa requirement for an Indian passport holder

A visa is required for every visit to Italy, regardless of length or purpose, since India has no visa-waiver arrangement with the Schengen Area.

Where and how to apply

• Confirm your jurisdiction (North/West/South) based on your state of residence, per VFS Global's jurisdiction map.
• Book your appointment through VFS Global, at a centre appropriate to your jurisdiction — VFS Global operates centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune, but not every centre accepts every jurisdiction's applications (see the West-jurisdiction restriction above).
• If your trip covers multiple Schengen countries, apply to whichever country is your main destination (most nights) or first point of entry, per standard Schengen rules — not necessarily Italy.

Eligibility and passport conditions

Your passport should be issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, and have at least 2 blank pages. VFS Global's own guidance stresses that any error in your personal details (name spelling, date of birth, passport number) at the appointment-booking stage can lead to rejection of the appointment itself, and that these details cannot be edited once submitted — double-check everything before booking.

Application steps

1. Confirm your correct jurisdiction (North/West/South) based on your state of residence.
2. Complete your application and gather the required documents for your jurisdiction.
3. Book your VFS Global appointment, taking care to book at a centre valid for your jurisdiction.
4. Attend your appointment with your passport, application, and supporting documents, and give biometrics.
5. Pay the visa fee and VFS service charge.
6. Wait for a decision from the relevant Embassy or Consulate — VFS Global notes that legal standard processing is around 15 calendar days, though this can extend to 4–6 weeks during busy periods (commonly the summer months).

Forms required

The Schengen application form, completed and signed, is the core document — there is no separate paper form for standard short-stay applicants beyond the standard Schengen form and its supporting checklist.

Document checklist

Typical requirements: your passport (issued within 10 years, valid 3+ months beyond departure, 2+ blank pages) and any previous passports showing travel history, the completed Schengen application form and a recent biometric photo, travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 across the Schengen area, a round-trip flight reservation, confirmed accommodation for your full stay, proof of funds (bank statements, salary slips, or ITRs), and a cover letter describing your itinerary and ties to India.

Photo and biometric requirements

A recent biometric-standard photo is required with your application. Fingerprints and a photo are captured in person at your VFS Global appointment.

Fees

The Schengen short-stay visa fee is set at EU level, the same framework described on our France and Germany guides. We were not able to independently confirm the exact current fee from a primary Italian government source during this review — multiple consistent secondary sources report an increase to €90 for adults effective from 11 June 2026, plus a separate VFS Global service fee. Confirm the current fee directly with VFS Global or the relevant Italian mission before paying, since fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome.

Appointment process

Book through VFS Global at a centre valid for your assigned jurisdiction — this is the one area where Italy differs meaningfully from some other Schengen countries, so don't assume you can use any VFS centre in India.

Processing information

The legally standard Schengen processing time is around 15 calendar days, but Italian consulates are commonly reported to take considerably longer — up to 4–6 weeks — during peak travel seasons (particularly June–September). Apply well in advance if travelling during this period.

Common mistakes

• Submitting your application to the wrong jurisdiction (North/West/South) for your state of residence — VFS Global is explicit this risks rejection without a fee refund.
• Booking your appointment at a VFS centre that doesn't accept your jurisdiction (particularly relevant for West-jurisdiction applicants).
• Entering incorrect personal details at the booking stage, which cannot be corrected afterward.
• Underestimating summer processing delays and applying too close to your travel date.
