🇮🇪 Ireland Visa Guide for Indian Passport Holders

Important: Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area

If you've read our guides for France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, or Switzerland, note that Ireland is different. Ireland is an EU member state but has opted out of the Schengen Area and operates its own, entirely separate visa system. Per the Department of Foreign Affairs' own guidance, stated plainly: "A Schengen visa is not valid for travel to Ireland," and "A UK visa is not valid for travel to Ireland," except in the narrow circumstances described below. A Schengen Type C visa from any of the countries in our other guides will not get you into Ireland.

Indian passport holders travelling to Ireland for tourism or business for 90 days or less need a Short Stay 'C' Tourist Visa, applied for entirely online through Ireland's own AVATS (Online Visa/Preclearance Application) system.

Two narrow exceptions worth checking

• British-Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS): allows Indian nationals residing in India (not those already resident in the UK) who hold an appropriate UK visitor visa and enter the UK as a visitor to travel onward to Ireland without a separate Irish visa, while still within their valid UK leave to remain.
• Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme (SSVWP): a related scheme with its own eligibility criteria — check the Irish Immigration website for current details.

Both schemes are explicitly not open to Indian nationals who reside in the UK, even if they hold a valid UK visitor visa — they're intended for those visiting the UK first and then continuing on to Ireland, not for UK-based Indian residents. If you don't fit these narrow schemes, apply for a standard Irish visa directly.

Choose your purpose of travel

If you're a visa-required national visiting Ireland for 90 days or less, you need the Short Stay 'C' Tourist Visa — this is the category covering standard tourism and short business trips.

A visa is required for entry to Ireland, since neither a Schengen visa nor (for most Indian applicants) a UK visa is accepted as a substitute, outside the narrow BIVS/SSVWP exceptions above.

Where and how to apply

• Complete your application entirely online using the AVATS system, then print and sign your completed form.
• Indian residents apply to the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi (NDEM), which also has responsibility for Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka applicants, and for Maldivian residents (though Maldivian passport holders themselves are not visa-required).
• Online fee payment is rolling out — since 8 December 2025, some applicants can pay their visa fee directly through AVATS after completing their application; check whether this applies to your specific case on the official AVATS payment-coverage page.

Application steps

1. Create your online application on AVATS, then print and sign your completed form.
2. Gather your supporting documents, which depend on your specific reason for travelling — check the Irish Immigration visa documentation page for your category's exact list.
3. Submit your application per the instructions for India-based applicants (NDEM).
4. Pay your visa fee, either online through AVATS (if your case qualifies for the rolling-out online payment facility) or through the payment method specified for your application.
5. Track your application through the official channels provided.
6. Receive your visa decision and, if approved, prepare for arrival in Ireland — note that all non-EEA nationals remain subject to immigration control on arrival, whether visa-required or not.

We were not able to independently confirm the exact current visa fee from a primary Irish Immigration Service fee-schedule source during this review. A secondary/aggregator source reports approximately USD 85 for a Short Stay visa, but confirm the current fee directly on the official AVATS system or the Irish Immigration website before applying.

Processing information

Processing times vary; check current estimates on the Irish Immigration website, and track your specific application through the official channels once submitted, since a single fixed processing time was not confirmed from the primary sources reviewed.

Common mistakes

• Assuming a Schengen visa or a UK visa grants entry to Ireland — neither does, except under the narrow BIVS/SSVWP schemes described above.
• Assuming BIVS applies to Indian nationals who are themselves UK residents — it explicitly does not; it's for those visiting the UK from India and continuing onward.
• Using an unofficial or fraudulent visa-assistance website instead of the official AVATS system, which the Embassy explicitly warns against.
• Not checking the Irish Immigration website's current nationality and document lists before assuming a fixed, generic requirement set.
