🇫🇮 Finland Visa Guide for Indian Passport Holders

Indian passport holders need a Schengen Short-Stay visa (Type C) to visit Finland for tourism or business — Finland is part of the Schengen Area, so this same visa also covers travel across other Schengen countries during your trip. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option. Applications are completed online through the official Finlandvisa.fi portal, then finalised in person at VFS Global, the official partner of the Finnish mission in India.

Important: ETIAS does not apply to Indian passport holders

You may see references to ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) in connection with Schengen travel. ETIAS is only for citizens of countries that are already visa-exempt for Schengen travel — it is a lighter-weight electronic authorisation for those nationalities, not a substitute for a visa. Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt for the Schengen area, so ETIAS does not apply to you — you still need the full Schengen Type C visa described on this page, regardless of ETIAS's rollout status.

Choose your purpose of travel

The Schengen Short-Stay (Type C) visa covers tourism, business visits, and family/friend visits, for stays up to 90 days. National (Type D) visas for longer stays — study or work — are a separate category, applied for through a different process, and out of scope for this guide.

Visa requirement for an Indian passport holder

A visa is required for every visit to Finland, regardless of length or purpose, since India has no visa-waiver arrangement with the Schengen Area.

Where and how to apply

• Fill in the visa application form on Finlandvisa.fi — the website also shows the documents, appendices, and passport photo specifications you'll need. You can complete the application online, or fill in a PDF version by hand or on a computer.
• Book an appointment for submitting your application at the VFS Global Visa Application Centre indicated for your country of residence.
• All visa applications must be submitted in person, with biometric identifiers collected at the same time — fingerprints will not be re-collected if you provided them for an earlier Schengen visa application within the last 59 months.
• Honorary consuls and honorary consulates do not grant visas — you must apply at the Visa Application Centre indicated by the nearest Finnish mission, not through an honorary consulate.
• Family members of EU citizens covered by the EU Free Movement Directive may submit their application either at a Visa Application Centre or directly at Finland's mission abroad — the mission may invite you to a personal interview to discuss your visit's purpose.

Eligibility and passport conditions

Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least 2 blank pages — consistent with standard Schengen requirements described in our France guide.

Application steps

1. Complete the visa application form on Finlandvisa.fi, checking the required documents and photo specifications shown on the site.
2. Gather your supporting documents per the checklist accompanying your application.
3. Book an appointment at your indicated VFS Global Visa Application Centre.
4. Submit your application in person, with biometrics collected at the same appointment (unless already provided within the last 59 months).
5. Pay the visa fee, plus any additional VFS Global service fee.
6. Wait for a decision — standard processing takes 15 days, though this can be longer if a more detailed examination is required.

The visa application form, completed either online or as a downloadable PDF (by hand or computer) on Finlandvisa.fi, is the core document.

Document checklist

Confirmed directly from Finlandvisa.fi's own guidance framework and consistent with standard Schengen practice: your passport (issued within the last 10 years, 3+ months validity, 2+ blank pages), the completed visa application form, a recent photo meeting the specifications shown on Finlandvisa.fi, travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 across the Schengen area, and evidence of financial means (widely-reported guidance suggests roughly €50 per day of stay, though we could not confirm this specific figure from the primary Finlandvisa.fi/Finland Abroad pages reviewed) and ties to India.

Photo and biometric requirements

A recent photo meeting Finlandvisa.fi's specifications is required with your application. Fingerprints and a photo are captured in person at your VFS Global appointment, unless you've already provided fingerprints for a Schengen visa application within the last 59 months.

Fees

The Schengen short-stay visa fee is set at EU level, the same framework as our other Schengen-country guides in this archive. We were not able to independently confirm the exact current fee from a primary Finlandvisa.fi or Finland Abroad fee-schedule source during this review. Confirm the current fee directly on Finlandvisa.fi or with VFS Global before applying.

Processing information

Per Finland Abroad's own guidance: you must submit your application no more than 6 months before the start of your intended visit. The processing time of a visa application is 15 days, though this may be longer if a more detailed examination of the application is required.

Common mistakes

• Assuming ETIAS applies to you as an alternative to the full Schengen visa — it does not; ETIAS is only for already visa-exempt nationalities.
• Attempting to apply at an honorary consulate — these do not grant visas.
• Assuming fingerprints must always be re-collected — this isn't necessary if you've provided them for a Schengen application within the last 59 months.
• Applying more than 6 months before your intended visit — Finland Abroad's own guidance specifies this window.
