Indian passport holders need a Schengen Short-Stay visa (Type C) to visit Austria for tourism or business — Austria is part of the Schengen Area, so this same visa also covers travel across other Schengen countries during your trip. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option. Applications go through VFS Global, the official partner of the Embassy of Austria in India, but all applications are assessed only by the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi.

Per the Austrian Embassy's own notice (effective 5 February 2026), walk-in visa applications for all visa categories are no longer accepted. You must book an appointment through VFS Global before attending in person — do not travel to a Visa Application Centre expecting to submit without a prior booking.
The Austrian Embassy in New Delhi can only process applications from people who can prove habitual residence in its territory, which covers India, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, or Sri Lanka. If you live elsewhere, even if you hold Indian citizenship, you must apply through the Austrian mission covering your actual place of residence instead.
The Schengen Short-Stay (Type C) visa covers tourism, business visits, family/friend visits, cultural events, and medical travel. Applications for residence permits (exceeding 6 months), job-seeker visas, or work-opportunity visas must be submitted in person directly at the Austrian Embassy, not through VFS Global — a different process from the standard short-stay visa covered in this guide.
A visa is required for every visit to Austria, regardless of length or purpose, since India has no visa-waiver arrangement with the Schengen Area. A stopover in Austria generally does not require a visa if you don't intend to enter the Schengen area — except for nationals of a specific list of countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and Syria), who need a transit visa regardless.

Your passport should be issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area, and have at least 2 blank pages. Multiple secondary sources report that, from 1 January 2026, Austria only accepts travel medical insurance from companies on an Embassy-approved list — we were not able to independently confirm this specific requirement from the primary BMEIA/VFS pages retrieved during this review, so verify the current approved-insurer list directly with VFS Global before purchasing a policy.

The Schengen short-stay visa fee is set at EU level, the same framework as our other Schengen-country guides in this archive. We were not able to independently confirm the exact current fee from a primary BMEIA or VFS fee-schedule source during this review. Confirm the current fee directly with VFS Global before applying, since fees are payable only in cash, credit/debit card, or UPI at the Visa Application Centre, and are non-refundable regardless of outcome.
