Urgench — Uzbekistan

Why ComeYou likely won't choose to — it's the modern transit hub for reaching Khiva and the wider Khorezm region
Pairs WithKhiva, a short ride away, is the actual destination

Where to Stay

Note — Urgench mostly functions as the transport gateway to Khiva and the Aral Sea region rather than a destination in its own right; most travelers base themselves in Khiva instead and pass through Urgench only for its train station/airport.

Urgench ended up being more than a transit base — an apartment was booked here for a full month, anticipating a return after the Aral Sea Eco-Marathon. Daily guest registration (a standard requirement for apartment stays in Uzbekistan) was paid separately throughout the stay.

What to Eat

Mostly self-managed with groceries, especially early in the stay, with a handful of restaurant visits along the way. Evenings were often spent around Amir Timur Park or Jaloliddin Manguberdi Square with new friends met at the apartment and nearby Urgench State University.

Where to Shop

This is where the marathon gear came from — running shoes, a shirt, pants, and a cap, picked up specifically to be ready for the Aral Sea Eco-Marathon, and the largest single shopping spend of the entire trip.

Urgench became a practical base, but it also carried some of the most important shopping and cooking memories.
