A UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2003) and by far the reason to come to Turkestan at all — commissioned by Timur himself in 1389 in honor of the Sufi poet and preacher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, and deliberately left partly unfinished on the exterior, which is still visible today in the unglazed brick sections. What makes it genuinely significant beyond its own scale: architectural historians consider it the direct prototype for the grand mausoleums Timur's dynasty later built in Samarkand — meaning the techniques and proportions worked out here were carried forward into some of the most famous buildings on the Uzbekistan leg of this same trip.

Turkestan sits along the same rail corridor used for the rest of this 2023 route (Shymkent, onward toward Astana) — a manageable stop to fold into a longer Kazakhstan itinerary rather than a standalone destination on its own.
