Aktau is genuinely unusual before you even see a single attraction: a Soviet-planned city built from scratch in 1961 to support uranium mining, laid out in numbered microdistricts rather than named streets — addresses here are literally a district number and a building number, nothing else. Worth knowing before arrival so it doesn't feel like a navigation failure on your part.
A long seafront promenade and beach area along the Caspian — the world's largest inland body of water — giving the city a genuine coastal feel despite sitting deep in Central Asia.
A walking trail along chalk cliffs on the edge of the city, a quieter, more scenic side of Aktau away from the planned grid of the microdistricts.
A preserved fighter jet monument, one of the city's more distinctive pieces of public art/history, tied to the region's Soviet-era military and industrial past.
Aktau's real drawing card is what it's a gateway to, not just what's in the city itself — the otherworldly landscapes of the wider Mangystau region: Bozzhyra Valley's chalk formations, Sherkala Mountain (nicknamed the "Shirt Mountain" for its shape), and underground mosques carved into the rock at Beket-Ata and Shakpak-Ata, both active pilgrimage sites as well as striking places to visit.
