Nalanda was a large Buddhist mahavihara (monastic complex) in the region of ancient Magadha, in present-day Bihar.

What the evidence shows

Unlike many entries in this archive, Nalanda sits substantially on the history/archaeology side of the line: there are excavated structural remains and accounts left by visiting monks. Where details come from later tradition rather than material evidence, this archive flags them as such.

Why it belongs here

Nalanda is a useful anchor for connecting texts, traditions, and periods: it was a place where texts were studied and transmitted, which makes it a natural hub linking philosophical and religious pages to a concrete historical setting.
